Chinese FM meets with Pakistani deputy PM in Beijing

As an ironclad friend, China will, as always, firmly support Pakistan in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, support Pakistan in exploring a development path suited to its national conditions, support Pakistan in resolutely combating terrorism, and support Pakistan in playing a greater role in international and regional affairs, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese foreign minister, said in meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Tuesday in Beijing.
Dar is in China for a visit from May 19 to 21. Chinese experts noted that the primary purpose of Dar's visit is to strengthen the ironclad relationship between China and Pakistan, as well as promoting the sound and steady development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) while jointly working to remove obstacles. They noted that as the timing of the visit comes shortly after heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Dar's briefing to the Chinese side on the situation will further enhance strategic communication.
Wang stated that China and Pakistan have maintained close strategic communication on consolidating their traditional friendship, enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation, and jointly addressing challenges, which reflects the high level of bilateral relations, according to a readout released on the website of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Dar said that Pakistan cherishes the brotherly ties between Pakistan and China, firmly adheres to the one-China principle, and supports China in safeguarding its national interests and dignity. Pakistan will make every effort to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel, projects, and institutions in Pakistan, Dar said.
Dar also briefed on the latest developments after Pakistan and India agreed on a ceasefire, expressing gratitude to the Chinese side for upholding justice and making unremitting efforts and significant contributions to promote a ceasefire and peace. The Pakistani side will be firmly committed to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also being willing to maintain dialogue with the Indian side to ease the situation.
China welcomes and supports India and Pakistan in properly addressing their differences through dialogue, achieving a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, and seeking fundamental solutions. This aligns with the fundamental and long-term interests of both sides, beneficial for regional peace and stability, and is also what the international community generally expects, said Wang Yi
Earlier on Tuesday, Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Dar. According to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry's release, both sides agreed to deepen linkages between the political parties of Pakistan and the CPC. Liu reiterated that as "all-weather strategic cooperative partner" and "ironclad friend", China would continue to prioritize its relations with Pakistan, Pakistan local media Dawn reported.
The primary purpose of Dar's visit is to strengthen the ironclad relationship between China and Pakistan, Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times on Tuesday. Qian noted that as the timing of the visit comes shortly after heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Dar is also likely to brief the Chinese side on the situation and enhance routine strategic communication.
During and after the India-Pakistan clash, China has maintained close communication with both sides, reflecting China's stance that both are important neighbors of China, and that the de-escalation serves the best interests of regional peace and stability, Qian said.
The CPEC, as a major cooperation project, will greatly contribute to the country's socioeconomic development, but it still faces various risks such as the threat of terrorism. Eliminating these threats has become an urgent issue for Pakistan. China also hopes to provide support and help create a stable and favorable environment for the development of the CPEC, Liu Zongyi, director of the Center for South Asia Studies at the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, told the Global Times.
